What Actually Changes a Work Truck’s Evaluation?

“2018 work truck with 160,000 miles” identifies a vehicle, but it does not describe the asset. A stock pickup, a service-body truck, and a box truck with a liftgate can share the same model year and mileage while having very different equipment, wear, and operating condition.

Start with the VIN, year, make, model, mileage, engine, transmission, and drivetrain. Then describe what makes the truck different: cab and chassis configuration, service or cargo body, liftgate, rack, hitch, PTO, hydraulics, compressor, dump equipment, or anything else that stays with the vehicle.

If you are selling a work truck or service-body truck, note the condition of the body and mounted equipment as well as the chassis. On a box truck, photograph the cargo floor and roof, rear door, body corners, and liftgate if equipped. Chassis mileage alone does not show whether the working part of the truck is still intact and functional.

Be just as precise about what is wrong. “Transmission slips after it warms up” is more useful than “transmission problem.” “Starts and idles but will not move under its own power” describes a different truck from one that does not crank at all.

Current photos do not need to look like dealership photos. Show the complete truck, dashboard, tires, work or cargo body, installed equipment, and damaged or non-working areas. An honest description makes the evaluation more useful than a polished sales pitch.

If It Doesn’t Run, Tell Us Where It Is Parked

For a disabled truck, the street address is only the beginning of the pickup plan. A truck in an open paved lot is different from one behind a building, inside a fenced yard, at a repair shop, beside a loading area, or blocked by other vehicles.

That is a practical issue in Paterson, not a manufactured local talking point. The Passaic County Urban Core Trucking Study is examining truck movements, deliveries, routing, roadway conditions, and access in Paterson, Passaic, and Clifton. The study notes that roadway geometry, connectivity, and surrounding land uses can make some local roads less suitable for large-truck travel.

Before pickup is scheduled, provide the details that can change the transportation plan:

• whether the truck rolls and steers
• whether the brakes release and, on an air-brake truck, whether it builds air
• whether all wheels and usable tires are installed
• whether gates, buildings, parked vehicles, or equipment restrict access
• whether there is enough room for transport equipment to approach and load

If the property has gate hours, security procedures, or a required site contact, include that information too. You do not need to spend money making an unsafe or disabled truck roadworthy simply for pickup; the important thing is describing the truck and access accurately before transportation is arranged.

Before You Repair It Just to Sell It, Get the As-Is Number

If you are repairing the truck because you still need it for work, that is one decision. If you are repairing it only because you assume it must be fixed before it can be sold, that is another.

Before authorizing a major engine, transmission, emissions, electrical, differential, or hydraulic repair solely for resale, find out what the truck is worth in its current condition. An expensive repair does not automatically increase the selling price by the amount you spend. The real cost can also include downtime, a growing repair estimate, and the possibility that another problem appears afterward.

In New Jersey, Remove the Plates Before the Truck Leaves

A truck can be priced and ready for pickup while the sale still gets delayed by ownership paperwork. New Jersey gives the seller several responsibilities that are worth handling before the vehicle is scheduled to leave.

According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s ownership-transfer guidance, the seller signs the seller section on the reverse of the title and gives the title to the buyer along with a bill of sale that includes the buyer’s name and address, date of sale, odometer reading, and sale price.

The license plates stay with the seller, not with the buyer. MVC says to remove and surrender the plates unless they are being transferred to another qualifying vehicle; plates may be transferred to another vehicle, but not to another owner.

If the title is missing, damaged, still shows a lien, has an ownership-name mismatch, or the truck is titled to a business or another party, raise that issue before pickup is scheduled.
